Case Logic DCB-302 vs. Tamrac TEK 4390
The Case Logic 302 is the smallest padded case with accessory pocket I would carry the G7X in. It's sleek, form fitting and lightweight. The padding is thickest in the back and front (behind the front pocket), with thinner padding along the bottom and along the sides (up to where the zipper starts). There isn't too much room in the pocket when the camera is inside since the lens barrel is protruding a bit into this space from inside, but just enough to hold an SD card and a couple spare batteries.
There is definitely more to hold onto with the Tamrac 4390. It feels larger in the hand, but it also feels more protected due to the thick padding which forms the entire inner case where the camera goes (except for the top flap area). Its shape also makes it feel larger since the edges are squared off instead of rounded like the 302.
In practice, I will use both cases for different outings. For a couple hours of casual shooting (just a few snapshots here or there) where I wouldn't necessarily feel the need to bring along extra batteries or backup SD card (but could if i wanted to), I'd take the 302. It's less obtrusive, more sleek, and a little lighter compared to the 4390.
But for extended outings where photography was one of the main objectives, I'd reach for the Tamrac. Since I'd wear the case either around my neck or on my belt the entire time, the extra padding would help protect against knocks and bumps, especially when hiking in the woods. I'd also be taking more photos, and therefore retrieving and stowing the camera more frequently so the the large-mouth opening and velcro (vs. zipper) fastener would be better in this situation. For this type of outing, I'd definitely want to have extra batteries and a backup SD card, and the larger front pocket would make fetching those items a little easier.
Of course either case would work in both of these situations, but it's good to have options.
